JEPHTE GUILLAUME - VOYAGE OF DREAMS

Jephte Guillaume "Voyage of Dreams" Album Review
Album Description
"Voyage Of Dreams", produced by Jephté Guillaume, provides a delicate balance between modern rhythms & expressions with the traditional ancestral elements of Jephté's Afro-Hatian-Latin heritage. A musical ambassador for the spiritual messages of both the Haitian revolution-reconstruction & the New York diaspora of today, Jephté embodies in his music the body & soul of Haiti - his songs, all sung in Haitian Kreyol, often take the form of incantations to a superior being (The Prayer) & renew the ancient beliefs of Vodou. This album is a concept album in its theme & structure, awashed in images of displacement, travel & the search for unity and spiritual fufillment. Jephté's songs offer prayers, ask for spiritual guidance from the elders, challenge the madness of oppression & misery, and offer the hope embodied in images of home, family, country & liberation. But anchoring almost all of this is the persistant beat - the groove - to inspire dance. The most powerful influence of Vodou on Jephté's music is the realization that the most profound questions & the most soul-wrenching quests need not be divorced from the joy of dancing. In a world where almost everyone seems to be in motion, where everyone seems to be a migrant or a traveller, and where families are seperated by oceans, Jephté's quest may just be our own....
ASSEMBLAGE 23 - DEFIANCE

"Defiance" album review
has a great beat. Each song has its own rhythm without loosing its basic beat process. Maps of "Reality" and "Blindhammer" are two of my personal favorites, having a fast, robust rhythm.

NEO - LO

Neo "Lo" Album Review
Out of left field & straight to the heart
I never would have stumbled on this, my new favorite CD, if not for the 0 degrees of separation fostered by online reviews. A guy from Texas who reviewed a book of mine also reviewed this CD. I loved his description of the music's "cathartic energy and abandon," ordered the CD, and am very glad I did.
It's always hard to describe music but I'd say the strains I hear in here come from all over the place: Celtic bagpipes, Herb Albert-style horns, spare alt-country strumming, carnival fun-house mirror riffs, musical saws, and what sounds like crickets. But it all holds together like a wired-up old car with a clanky throaty hum coming from the engine.
The vocals are kind of hard and flat and painful, in the best possible way. If Jeff Mangum ever took singing lessons he did the right thing and forgot everything he ever learned. It sounds like he HAS to sing, no two ways about it. His straining to go higher or louder makes the limitations of his voice all the more evident, but it also somehow makes the songs better -- deeper and with more of an edge. He's also an inspired and highly poetic lyricist - if I started quoting I wouldn't stop until I'd transcribed half the album.
I'll indulge in just one utterly subjective analogy: Listening to these songs is like hearing a eulogy that's so raw and poetic and elliptical it makes you smile to be still drawing breath.
